During this expedition Hind lived almost constantly amongst the Crees and Chippeways. The attractive coloured plates described as 'chromoxylographs' are in fact wood-engravings tinted from another engraved block in one, two or three tints. Waterton writes about his visit to Audubon where he saw his paintings.
"In April 1812 Waterton left Stabroek to collect 'a quantity of the strongest Wourali poison; and to reach the inland frontier fort of Portuguese Guiana'. He entered the watershed where legend had established Lake Parima and the fabulous city of Manoa. He reached Fort São Joachim where the commandant told him he had been forty years in Guiana and had never met anbgody who had seen the lake. Waterton returned to England in 1813." Howego W16
