Andersson, an Anglo-Swedish naturalist, and one of the great travellers and explorers of Africa, set out in 1850, with Francis Galton, to follow Livingstone's trail to Lake Ngami. Unlike Livingstone they approached from the west, across what is now Namibia, through unexplored Ovamboland and back to the coast. In 1853 Andersson tried again, this time alone, and successfully reached Ngami through Bechuanaland. Continuing on he attempted to reach the Okavango, but was again prevented by tribal disputes, and finally succeeded on a later expedition. He later became deeply involved in the tribal politics of south-west Africa, as champion of the Damara people. He was also an expert on South African birds.

Andersson intended to explore these countries right up to the Cunene or Nourse River, but the difficulties of the expedition, though encountered with indomitable courage, proved to be insuperable, and he had to turn back. He obtained, however, much valuable information, and his success as a hunter and collector was unique in this part of the continent. The coastline of South-West Africa is carefully described, and there is an interesting account of the once-famed guano island, Ichaboe." Mendelssohn Mendelssohn I, p42

First US Edition, large 8vo, pp xiv, 535, frontispiece, 2 folding maps in slip case, 19 plates, numerous illustrations, original blue cloth, gilt vignette (herd of hippopotamus), excellent. £850
"Accompanied by Ludwig von Höhnel, the author set out on a scientific expedition to explore the regions north of the River Tana, between Lakes Rudolph and Stephanie and the Indian Ocean. Chanler preferred lightweight Winchester and Mannlicher repeating rifles as opposed to large caliber express rifles, and decried the notion of 'shocking' power as a sales tool of gunmakers. Near the Mackenzie River, the party bagged hippopotamus and rhinoceros. Following the Guaso Nyiro, they discovered the river dropping sixty feet over a course of black lava and named the flow Chanler Falls. They continued to hunt rhino as well as collecting oryx and other plains game, eventually bagging elephant near Rendile territory. A well-written work of discovery, adventure, and big game hunting." FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp xvi, 299, folding map, 3 hand-coloured aquatints, 19th century brown half calf, a very good copy. £190
"One of the cleverest volumes of fabricated travels ever produced. The details are so circumstantial, and the mixture of fact and fiction is accomplished with so much skill, that it is not uncommon to find people who do not know that the account of the travels is nothing more than a well-contrived literary deception. Much of the compilation is evidently based on Le Vaillant, as far as South Africa is concerned, and the author quotes liberally from his works, and is bold enough to contradict some of the statements contained in these volumes." p408 Mendelssohn I

"Jameson joined the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition as naturalist, under the direction of Stanley and was left as second-in-command of the rear column in Yambuya. In May 1988, whilst visiting the Riba Riba settlement, he expressed the view that cannibalism was believed to be 'travellers' tales', or lies. Presently a young girl was killed and dismembered in his presence, until the last moment, he could not believe they were in earnest and was horrified and sickened by the sight. After his death, Stanley reported the story in 'The Times', reporting that Jameson had almost directly invited the girl's death. But his loyal determination to carry out Stanley's orders at all risks and the endurance of hunger, toil and illness, go far to counterbalance the incident that marred his fame." p1577 DNB II

But at Egga the expedition was forced to turn back due to the appalling incidence of disease and death. There were very few expeditions of any kind up the Niger at this date; the climate was too hostile. Simpson's account of the trials besetting the expedition is affecting, there were fifty deaths.

This work describes Speke's first two expeditions to East Africa: JOURNAL OF ADVENTURES IN SOMALILAND, and JOURNAL OF A CRUISE ON THE TANGANYIKA LAKE. "In offering this short connected history of my first two explorations in Africa, I must state that I have been urged to do so by friends desirous of knowing what led to the discovery of the source of the Nile. The greater part of it was originally published in BLACKWOOD'S MAGAZINE, but that lacked the connection which I have now given to the conclusion of my independent journey to and from the Victoria N'yanza, which is the great source of reservoir of the Nile. The manner in which I traced the Nile down from Victoria N'yanza to Egypt is explained in my JOURNAL OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE ." Introduction. Czech 151; Hess & Coger 419
